Weathernotes for Sunday, March 16, 2003

A potent Pacific system with unusually strong jet stream dynamics enhanced as it passed through the L.A. basin on Saturday, resulting in a record setting 4.10 inches of rain at Downtown Los Angeles (USC) yesterday. According to the NWS this is the second highest 24 hour rainfall total for Los Angeles since record keeping began in 1877.

These IR satellite photos from the Naval Research Laboratory shows the jet enhanced region of precipitation offshore at noon (PST) on Saturday (3/15) and then again at 2:00 p.m. This visible satellite photo, also taken at 2:00 p.m., shows some of the features of the jet enhanced region.

Since July 1, the recorded rainfall in downtown Los Angeles (USC) is now 1.81 inches above normal. Last year in mid-March Los Angeles rainfall was about 8.5 inches below normal. The current 6-10 day, 8-14 day, and week 2 forecasts suggest generally drier and warmer weather than average over the next two weeks. Computer models suggest the possibility of a shower in the mountains and areas to the north of the L.A. basin Thursday and then again next Sunday or Monday. We'll see!
