Weathernotes for Saturday, January 3, 2004

With a pattern change possibly in the works, yesterday's rainfall may be the last significant precipitation Southern California sees for a while. Ensemble forecast means show a change from a persistent trough to a persistent ridge that could shunt weather to our north until mid-January or beyond. The ECMWF forecast is not so bullish on the building ridge, so we'll see!

Yesterday, rainfall amounts in our area generally ranged from 0.25 to 0.75 inch. The rainfall brought the (preliminary) seasonal total at Los Angeles (USC) to 3.15 inches, which is 1.68 inches below normal for the date. [Note: The preliminary value of 3.96 inches, initially reported appears to have been recorded in error.]

Once again strong jet dynamics and orographic lift combined to produce heavy Sierra snow. Prior to this storm the Sierra snowpack was reported at 158% of normal, and today is reported at 162%. Mammoth Mountain is reporting a base depth of 10-12 ft. with 50+ inches of new snow, and a cumulative snowfall total this season of 253 inches.
