Upper Tyndall Creek (11.400 ft.), Sierra Nevada, Temperature Drop 04/15/02

Weathernotes for Monday, April 15, 2002

Another energetic, but relatively dry trough has moved down the west coast resulting in a few sprinkles or light showers, strong winds and dramatically colder temperatures.

In the Sierra Nevada, a snow sensor at Upper Tyndall Creek (11,400 ft.) recorded a temperature drop of 41 degrees from yesterday afternoon, to 11:00 this morning, when a temperature of 7 degrees F. was recorded!

Gusty winds have been widespread. Automated weather stations on the east slopes of the Southern Sierra recorded gusts of 64 mph at Walker Pass, and 74 mph at Indian Wells Canyon.

Closer to home there were a few light showers around the L.A. Basin, with rainfall totals generally 0.1 inch or less. Los Angeles (USC) recorded 0.07" of rain, bringing the season total to 4.34", or 10.21" below normal. According to a public information statement issued by the NWS Oxnard, Los Angeles is on pace to have the driest water year since recording of data began in 1877! This Precipitation Percent of Normal map from the WRCC shows the extent of the drought.
