The Skykomish, Running The Needle On Boulder Drop

Notes

How many dogs do you know that enjoy running gnarly Class V rapids? Here, Dan and his Husky "Cheena" are running the Needle, in Boulder Drop, on the Skykomish River (WA), Memorial Day, 1994.

According to Dan, Cheena loved to boat. She started when she was a puppy, and in this photo was about seven years old. I recently asked Dan how she handled swims in big rapids. No problem! She was very adept at self-rescue, quickly swimming to shore and then running along the bank until she could get back into the boat. If the raft ended up on the opposite shore, she would just swim to the other side. What a dog! Sadly, Cheena was stolen from Dan in 1995.

The flow was about 5500 cfs.
